I gave Swell Life Self Tanner 3 out of 5 stars, so in my opinion it was slightly better than average.
I really love the color this one produces; it’s dark and bronze. It doesn’t have an orange hue at all, it’s a true brown color. I also like how long my tan lasted. It lasted 5-6 days, which is really good.
Now, to get this tan I had to go through the God-awful application process. Let’s just say applying this one is a major pain in the butt. It’s so thick and hard to blend in.
Another downfall of this self tanner is the price. It’s $10.99 per ounce. The size of the bottle is also pretty small, so it won’t last you very long.
So overall, I liked the color of this one, but there were other factors that caused me to rank this one 3 out of 5 stars.
Look and Feel
Swell Life Self Tanner is an extremely thick, dark brown lotion. The lotion is probably the thickest one I’ve ever used, and the color is so dark it almost looks black.
To say application is a nightmare is an understatement.
First, the product is so thick that it won’t even come out of the pump bottle. So I had to unscrew the top and squeeze it out. Which created another problem. The bottle is very thick and strong, so it’s really hard to squeeze any product out. Then, once I started applying it, I had product all over my hands, which then transferred to the bottle, creating a huge mess.
Once I was finally able to get some product out of the bottle, it took forever to blend into my skin. This is one where you’ll need to put a lot of effort in.
The dark guide kind of just sits on your skin until your put a little elbow grease into it and really rub it in.
After I blended the product into my skin (which took a good 30 minutes), I looked very streaky and SO dark.
They provide you with 2 black latex gloves to wear while applying, and I strongly suggest you use them.
Swell Life Self Tanner took about 20 minutes to dry once I applied it.
After that, my skin felt smooth, although when my body parts would touch each other I still felt sticky.
Smell (Before Application)
This self tanner has a very light smell.
It smells a tiny bit perfume-y, honestly it didn’t have much of a smell at all. So I didn’t mind it.
Smell (After Several Hours And The Next Day)
I left the product on overnight and I still couldn’t smell much the next morning.
A little DHA scent, but that was it.
I was worried about how my tan was going to look, just based on how streaky the guide was.
But overall, my tan was pretty smooth. I had a few streaks on my inner thighs, but I was very happy with how dark my tan was.
Swell Life Self Tanner gave me a nice, deep bronze color. I really loved how it looked (besides the little bit of streaking).
This one may be too dark for those of you who are looking for a more natural or light tan.
How Long It Lasts
This one claims to last 10 days, which it doesn’t.
But my tan lasted 5-6 days, which is still really good.
My tan became very streaky as it faded.
OK For Men?
Yes, if you’re looking for a dark tan. But application is a pain, just keep that in mind.
Swell Life Self Tanner is $32.99 for a 3.5 ounce bottle. That comes out to $10.99 per ounce, which is SO expensive. I don’t think I’d pay that again to be honest.
